Healthcare Supervisor, Camp Smitty

GENERAL SUMMARY

 Located in Eganville, ON, Camp Smitty is operated by BGC Ottawa, offers a beautiful lakefront setting, fantastic staff team, and dynamic programs for campers aged 8 to 16 years old. 

Reporting to the Camp Manager, the Health Care Supervisor plays a key leadership role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff. This position oversees all aspects of health services at camp - including daily care, first aid response and medical recordkeeping. As a trusted resource and role model, the Health Care Supervisor helps create a safe and supportive environment where every camper can thrive.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIES

Major Responsibility 1: Health Care & Safety Support
  • Provide health care to meet the individual needs of campers and staff
  • Set up and maintain the camp Health Centre
  • Organize, inventory, and order medical supplies and equipment
  • Ensure camp has adequate resources to support health and safety across all areas
Major Responsibility 2: Medical Recordkeeping & First Aid Management
  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all campers and staff
  • Ensure medical forms are on file and up to date
  • Log all treatments and medication distribution in the daily medical log
  • Complete and file accident/incident report forms
  • Prepare and distribute well-stocked first aid kits to all key areas of camp (vehicles, kitchen, activity spaces, waterfront, out-trips, etc.)
Major Responsibility 3: Health Screening & Risk Management
  • Screen all incoming campers and staff for health clearance
  • Verify health histories, emergency authorizations, and assess for any observable illness
  • Safely store and administer medication as needed
  • Lead and support the camp’s risk management procedures related to health and safety
  • Contact parents directly in the event of serious illness, injury, or emergency treatment
Major Responsibility 4: Training & Staff Support
  • Provide staff with orientation and ongoing guidance related to health protocols and emergency procedures
  • Ensure all staff understand their role in supporting camper and staff health
  • Support the education of staff around common health conditions, accident prevention, and mental wellness
  • Participate in staff training, meetings, and evaluations as required
Major Responsibility 5: General Camp Support
  • Support and actively participate in the camp community as part of the leadership team
  • Be a positive role model and contribute to a safe, respectful, and fun environment
  • Assist with any other duties as required by the Camp Manager or leadership

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations
  • Experience providing care to children and youth in dynamic or outdoor settings
  • Confidence in providing guidance, direction, and support to fellow staff
  • Knowledge of first aid, child health, communicable diseases, and risk prevention
  • Understanding of anti-discriminatory practice and inclusive care
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Multilingualism is an asset
  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary studies in Nursing or a related health field is an asset


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Valid certification in Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Experience working with children or youth in a camp, school, or care setting
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment with flexibility and enthusiasm

Please note: Police Records Check (vulnerable sector) is required for all camp employees.

Compensation:
Contract sum of $7,500

Start Date:
June 16th 2025

Example: Much of the work is performed in an active environment. The employee is required to conduct labour including to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
