Out Trip Coordinator, Camp Smitty

GENERAL SUMMARY
Located in Eganville, ON, Camp Smitty is operated by BGC Ottawa and offers a beautiful lakefront setting, a fantastic staff team, and dynamic programs for campers aged 8 to 16 years old.
Working closely with the Camp Manager, the Out Trip Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning, preparing, and leading all overnight and backcountry out trips. This includes one multi-night trip and two single-night trips each session. The role ensures camper safety, builds outdoor programming capacity, and supports other camp functions where needed. As part of the senior staff team, this position models exceptional leadership and contributes to creating inclusive and memorable camp experiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIES
Major Responsibility: Plan and Prepare for the Out Trip Program
- Plan out trip routes and coordinate transportation logistics
- Ensure all gear and equipment are safe, organized, and in good working condition
- Collaborate with kitchen staff to build menus and pack food supplies
- Develop trip-specific program plans in coordination with leadership staff
- Review emergency and risk management procedures with the senior team
- Provide pre-trip instruction and gear orientation for staff and campers
Major Responsibility: Lead and Oversee Out Trips
- Supervise all aspects of multi-day out trips, ensuring safety protocols are followed
- Serve as the primary lead for all first aid and emergency responses while on trip
- Support camp leadership staff in delivering inclusive and engaging outdoor programming
Major Responsibility: Support Camp Program Development and Delivery
- Build positive relationships with campers and promote active participation
- Assist in identifying programming gaps and recommend improvements to the Camp Manager
- Mentor and provide feedback to staff and volunteers to enhance program quality
- Support other program areas at Camp Smitty as needed
DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to build constructive relationships with children and youth
- Experience working with equity-deserving or underserved youth
- Confident in managing outdoor trips and leading emergency response
- Collaborative and able to work effectively in a team environment
- Knowledge of child development, youth engagement, and outdoor education
- Working knowledge of child protection legislation and safeguarding best practices
- Experience of managing and supervising part-time staff and volunteers
- Ability to assess, implement, and evaluate diverse programs and supports that promote positive outcomes for children and youth
- Multilingualism is considered an asset
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education, Training, and Experience:
- Completed diploma or degree in Child and Youth Work, Outdoor Education, Recreation, or a related field
- Current certifications in First Aid (Wilderness First Aid preferred)
- Recognized Lifeguard qualification (e.g., NLS)
- Previous experience leading outdoor or camping trips
- HIGH FIVE certification is an asset

Compensation:
Contract sum of $8000
