Serving more than 12,000 young people each year, BGC Ottawa delivers free programs and services across Ottawa through four Clubhouses, Camp Smitty and community-based neighbourhood programming. Position summary

Located in Eganville, ON, Camp Smitty is operated by BGC Ottawa and offers a beautiful lakefront setting, a fantastic staff team, and dynamic programs for campers aged 8 to 16 years old.

Reporting to the Camp Manager and working closely with the Head Cook, the Sous Chef supports the daily operations of the camp kitchen. This full-time, seasonal position plays a key role in preparing and serving balanced meals, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, and ensuring the smooth delivery of food services throughout each camp session. The Sous Chef contributes to a positive kitchen culture and upholds high standards of safety, hygiene, and teamwork.



RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIES

Major Responsibility: Provide Food Service and Maintain Kitchen Operations
  • Assist in the preparation and serving of balanced, nutritious meals in accordance with the camp menu
  • Ensure proper storage of all food items and kitchen equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in all kitchen areas
  • Support regular kitchen inventory and organization
  • Report equipment issues to the Head Cook promptly
  • Follow food safety and hygiene protocols at all times
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-focused kitchen environment

Major Responsibility: Training and Team Engagement
  • Follow all BGC Ottawa policies and procedures
  • Attend all required training sessions before and during the camp season
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and performance evaluations
  • Support fellow staff members and promote a safe, inclusive camp environment

Other Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as required to support the overall success of Camp Smitty and the kitchen team


DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong communication and time management skills
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
  • High energy, strong work ethic, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Experience working with children, youth, or in a kitchen/camp environment is an asset
  • Knowledge of food safety, child development, and youth-focused practices
  • Awareness of child protection legislation and anti-discriminatory practices
  • Multilingualism is considered an asset


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Currently enrolled in High School or Post-Secondary studies
  • Experience working in a kitchen environment is an asset
  • Safe Food Handling certification is preferred
  • Current First Aid certification required
  • HIGH FIVE® certification is an asset

Compensation:
Contract sum of $7500

Start Date:
June 15th 2026

Ende date:
August 21st 2026
